The 2’s could easily have been consigned to the role of bridesmaids on the seasons final Saturday, but they were having none of it as Dave Whitmores men bought the competitive league season to a fantastic finale with a last over win against Shepshed.
Bowling first, the guys did well to eventually restrict the visitors to 228/7 off their 45 overs as at one stage it loked as though they could have been chasing a lot more. Tej Thakkar took the bowling honours with 2/14 from his 7 overs.
Steady batting saw us move slowly, but remain in contention as Asif (30) and Dips (22), established a platform. However, we needed an injection of pace to the innings and it came in the unlikely form of debutant Jack Allen and Luke Spence. They added a crucial 80 for the 5th wicket, with Luke helping his young partner to find his feet at this level. As Jack grew in confidence he took a liking to the opposition spinners before Luke added to his run out victims by giving him a helping hand for a well made 20!
Luke was joined by Monik and Fido (who was now going to be Lukes runner!)…cue mayhem….overthrows…run out chances…comedy …and a spike in the run rate before Luke perished for an excellent 82.
Monik and skipper Whitty’ were faced with needed 25 off the last 2 overs to secure a win and add to the party spirit. the Chairman announced that he would get the drinks if the 2’s won…confident that his money was safe no doubt!
However, wehn Monik launched a great straight 6 off the final ball of the penultimate over only 7 were needed and we were now in the driving seat. as the Chairman checked his wallet, Whitty ensured that there would be no hiccups as he ended the game with 2 successive 4’s and a great day was ended in fantastic style.
The lads finished 7th, and were the highest placed 2nd team in the county which is a tremendous achievement.
