|The 1’s clinched their first Everards league title since 2006 at Fleckney Rd on Saturday. Having dispatched Stoughton and Thurnby on the pitch, there was a huge cheer in the bar when news of Harborough’s draw against Syston was confirmed by friendly local journalist Tim Murray.
That result meant that Matt Craven’s merry men couldn’t be caught and so, with one week still to go the party could begin and there would be no final weekend drama’s.
On the pitch, the visitors were invited to bat first and proceeded to bat with a vigour and purpose not seen since skipper Craven last went to the bar.
Their approach was surprising given their lowly status and the fact that they still had time to escape relegation.
The innings finally ground to a halt with the score at 139/9 off their full allocation of 50 overs.
All of the bowlers were economical, but wicket taking honours’ went to Tom Driver (3/29) and Tim Mason (2/20).
The innings was also notable for a stunning catch taken by Matt Bashford who rolled back the years to dive full length to pouch a stunner.
In response, in spite of the early loss of Saif to a questionable leg before decision, Captain Fantastic got back amongst the runs and was well supported by Aadil Ali as they took the score to 78 before the latter departed for a run a ball 34.
Although there followed a rare KCC failure for Josh Cobb, Andy Smith ensured that there would be no mistakes as he escorted Craves’ almost to the line,(but certainly long enough for him not to be first to the bar), before the skipper was last out for 68.
The job was completed as Darren Shaw joined Pedro in the middle and we were home with just 32 overs gone.
A fantastic achievement from the team and congratulations to everyone involved.
The team will look to sign off the season in style against Syston next Saturday but as Meat Loaf once famously sang “2 out of 3 aint bad” and the 2013 vintage will go down as a good one.
