Under 13’s Come Up Just Short in County League Final

Grace Road hosted Kibworth’s u13’s in the season’s finale, the county league final.
Plumtree cc, from South Notts would prove to be more than worthy opponents. With the County Ground bathed in sunshine Plumtree, having won the toss, took to the field and welcomed the KCC openers.
After a cautious start, Jack Houlihan was soon back to his sublime best. After seeing his batting average dip to below 200, Jack drove & cut his way to 31 before retiring.
Harry Pounds ( 15 ) & Ben O’Boyle played positively in trying to put a defendable total on the board.
Despite losing wickets in the middle overs, our boys were handily placed on 89-5 with 4 overs left of the allotted 20. However, the lower mid/lower order failed to find gaps and to hit the ropes often enough, meaning Kibworth closed on what looked like a below par 102-8.
However, no one told openeing bowler Jack Bellamy, whose first 3 overs cost just 3 runs, and included a wicket, whilst at the other end Ginger Ninja Harry Pounds’ first 2 went for just 8. Our boys were very much in the game as after 6 overs Plumtree were 19-1.
At this point batsmen Plowman ( 28 ) & Bhabra ( 30 retired ) played their part in a crucial and ultimately match winning partnership. When captain Pounds eventually trapped Plowman LBW, only a handful of runs were needed,
Plumtree duly won by 8 wickets and were worthy champions. A great experience was had by all, parents, families, coaches and most importantly the players.
So, for most it’s under 15’s cricket next season, but what a great 2 years our under 13’s have had.
4 cup finals, a brief flirtation in the nationals, and only 4 defeats in nearly 40 matches !
Many thanks to the boys for their dedication, hard work & for being a great bunch to coach.
A HUGE thanks to the parents for their help, support & for giving me lifts to & from games !
Finally, thanks to Ian for his organising skills, texts, e-mails etc. Must be time for a new tattoo and maybe a piercing Ian……………………in no particular order !

As a footnote, a huge thanks to Steve Bellamy for his excellent match reports during the season.
