The 4’s welcomed back Dunc Jones to the fold, nervous that we usually lose when he is on the field but buoyed by an excellent win the previous week against Enderby.
Losing the toss the boys found themselves in the field on a glorious day and at a lovely ground.
Some excellent early bowling from the newly ‘wasp stung’ Chairman and Ginger Jimmy Pounds finally brought some reward when young Harry pulled off a stunning one handed caught and bowled and was mobbed by his team mates.
However, it became apparent that the batsman wasn’t walking and the umpire then said he hadn’t seen it and so a ridiculous stand off ensued. The skipper then intervened and advised Cropston that if thats the way they wished to play cricket feel free but we would have no part of it.
Chairman soon found his rhythm (by about the 8th over), and took 2 quick wickets as Cropston fell behind what looked like a par score.
However the post drinks session didn’t go well and with Dunc, Harry and Sam taking some stick we found ourselves chasing 209 to win.
A great start by Lord Parker and John Pounds saw the 100 up without problem and we had a platform. JP decided that he needed to go into town to collect his new phone and so ‘opened up’ missed s straight one and was bowled for a brilliant 80.
Hardick came and went, so did Lewis, so did Windy and so did Sam and when Lord Parker departed for a well crafted 25 (before retiring for a lager on the boundary!)we were left needing 40 at more than a run a ball.
However, any panic was misplaced as we had our 2 14 year old stroke makers Adam Dakri and Harry Pounds at the crease. Their resolve was no doubt strengthened by looking over to the pavilion and seeing only the skipper, chairman and dun to come!
They batted with great maturity, running well between the wickets and then taking the odd boundary.
It really was a pleasure to witness, and they eventually saw us home with just 2 balls to spare and victory was ours and the sourness of earlier exchanges forgotten.
A proper 4th team game with all contributing and another great win…well done everyone!
