At long last did we manage to stage the final of the County Cup on a glorious Kibworth Sunday morning, a fitting setting for the conclusion of a long junior season.
After an eternal deliberation Harrison elected to bat first and put runs on the board despite a damp outfield and somewhat more disturbingly the state of Kieran’s well being, following a night out with brother Callum and the notorious Lodge’s! Fortunately his pre-match shower appeared to ‘invigorate’ him in some odd fashion as he was deemed fit to face the first ball.
Mahang fell early for 12 but thereafter Kieran and Harrison set about the Soar Valley bowlers with gusto, batting unbeaten through the 20 overs to end on 161. Kieran’s 81 and Harrison’s 50 were fitting contributions in their last U17 game for the club.
To their credit Soar Valley looked to chase the score and progressed steadily, but to their detriment lost wickets along the way with Jahangir and Harry P picking up 2 wickets each. At 93 for 4 off 11 overs and their number five cutting loose with 3 huge sixes Harrison blinked and brought himself on, bad back and all! The fifth ball took a top edge and went high and was swirling down, thankfully Josh Smith stood underneath calmly and with composure to remove the danger man. With Harrison’s work done Rajiv and Lewis came on to mop up the rest with 2 wickets a piece and leave Soar Valley at 103 all out.
It could all have been so different had Soar Valley held on to their catches with at least 4 going down, whereas we caught everything! ‘Catches win matches’ was never more true.
All in all a great performance from a very young side and a great send off, with thanks, for the senior players.
