Kibworth interest in the Kingfisher cup ended on Sunday when they were bundled out for just 44 by Banbury in pursuit of the visitors total of 161. The home side left nearly half their overs unused as the capitulated in the face of an accurate seam attack. In truth the Oxfordshire side, who were without six players due to Minor Counties commitments, should probably not have been allowed to score as many as they did after falling to 90-7 but the home batsmen were never in the hunt.

In contrast Kibworth 4th team can look forward to a second round tie in the league Junior cup after a four wicket victory over Croft. Kean Folley’s unbeaten 50 was the backbone of the home sides effort as they chased down a target of 163.

The keenly anticipated first KCC Real Ale weekend was a huge success with stocks of guest beers just about getting through to Sunday evening!
During the weekend we offered 5 guest ales from the local Potbelly Brewery in Kettering, together with renowned organic cider from nearby Hallaton.
The ales had been selected by our own panel of “Sunday Lunchtime Club” experts and the unanimous response from punters over the weekend was that we had chosen well…..with many of them claiming to have drunk the “full house” of fare on offer!
A huge thank you to Michael and Elaine from our friends at Kibworth Wine for their help and support in getting the event up and running and we will be hosting another one during the season so watch this space!

The 4th team finally got their season up and running on Saturday and made up for lost time with a great victory against one of the pre-season promotion favourites Countesthorpe at Fleckney Rd.
Featuring a largely inexperienced bowling attack the skipper invited Countesthorpe to bat first on a wicket which had evidence of damp at one end due to a covers “malfunction”.
A benefit of the widespread player unavailability is the opportunity granted to others and Saturday saw a debut for junior prospect Harrison Norton who took the new ball with a promoted from first change, Chris Carson.
Both bowlers bowled fine spells, and withstood the barrage of some big hitting during the innings and finished with a well deserved 3 wickets each.
The inexperienced seam attack were backed up by the unlikely spin pairing of Father and Son Pounds. Pounds Senior (on his birthday), bowled tightly and nipped a couple of wickets….in truth it could have been more but for some dubious catching……and was superbly backed up from the other end by son Sam who finished with great figures of 2-22.
Countesthorpe were dismissed for 172 in the 44th over, a disappointment to KCC as at one point the visitors were in deep trouble at 89-7…..however, some savage hitting by the lower order swung the momentum their way going into tea.
The mood of the home team was not helped by the early dismissals of young Joel and Vice Captain Ellwood to leave us tottering on 5-2. However, a fine rebuilding job was then done by Joel Senior and the debutant Bob Pritchard who added 90 runs for the 3rd wicket to get us back in the game with Pritchard contributing 43, Joel 35 before a steady 20 from Blunt maintained the momentum.
Kibworth then decisively grabbed the initiative during a 60 run partnership between the skipper and Dave Pounds which featured some aggressive running to put pressure on the opposition fielders. The skipper departed with just 12 needed for victory leaving Sam Pounds to join his dad in safely seeing us over the finishing line with 4 overs to spare.
A great all round team effort and a fantastic game played in excellent spirtit and which swung one day then the other. A maximum points haul was a great return given the pre match selection trials and tribulations and one that should give us great confidence that we can have a good season.

Comfortable wins for the Sunday XI are few and far between. A bit like rocking horse manure, hens teeth or an Abbott temperance pledge, however that was the scenario on the
bottom square.

Perennial opponents Old Wyvernians were undoubtedly unlucky to run in to a team that was somewhat stronger than the norm thanks to late drop outs and the skipper
grabbing any one at the last minute who was either passing or was daft enough to leave their phone on. The visitors won the toss and chose to insert the home XI.

Dave Greenhalgh opened up and promptly laid waste to any notion that the wicket would be tricky for big shots by clubbing some lusty blows around the park as he raced to 65
before retiring himself, either to make a game of it or to allow normal colour to come back into his cheeks. Kibworth were cruising at 100 for 1 and thoughts of further swift progress and perhaps an early declaration began to permeate. It would however not be the
Legends XI without a mid-innings wobble, well to be blunt this was the sort of collapse that would only be bettered by an epic silicone failure on a Page Three photo shoot. 100 for 1 became 140 odd for 5, 150 odd for 8 and finally 198 all out when Kean Folley
was castled by the diminutive Lewis Scott from the Pylon end. Ever the
gentleman though the skipper walked up to his pint sized tormenter and
shook his hand before walking back to the pavilion for tea. A tea notable for the considerable efforts of Harry Miller to construction a Mr. Kipling sponsored tower on his plate before demolishing said construction in a manner that Fred Dibnah would have
been proud.

After tea ‘Old Wyvs’ soon found themselves in a whole host of trouble at 15 for 5 in reply, Bradders mixing up the unplayable with the more entertaining before he was
diplomatically withdrawn. Harry showed few signs of his calorific Olympics but didn’t quite secure the same level of success and there was still time for some nagging medium pace from Badri and Sam Pounds and The Bard, both on tweaking duty, to secure a couple
of victims a piece before the close of proceedings in the 25th over with the Old Wyvs still over 100 adrift.

All good fun it has to be said and good for the spirits too ahead of the first road trip of the season to Huncote next weekend. Tally ho sports fans!

KCC 3rd XI welcomed S&L Corby to Fleckney rd for the 3rd game of the 2012
NCL season. With last week’s clash against big rivals Grendon called off without
a ball being bowled skipper Hill was keen to get a game played wherever possible
and huge thanks must go out to Paul Abbot and his team for getting a wicket
prepared in such difficult weather related conditions.
Obviously Chris lost the toss and despite the new points system encouraging teams to bat first KCC were put in. Regular 3rd team stalwart Luke Spence was paired with debutant
Lawrence Joel and this new pairing set about the S&L bowling with
intelligence and good shot selection. LJ took on the attacking role scoring a
bright 27 before being caught at mid off with Luke anchoring the innings only
occasionally depositing the ball into the swamp that surrounded the bottom pitch
boundary. An opening stand of 73 was an excellent platform and allowed others to
come, club and go home. Dave Greenhalgh replaced LJ and set about some tidy
bowling with some decidedly untidy shots. An agricultural 19 from him before
being caught and bowled by an impressive Chris Dunn from the pylon end saw
Skipper Hill come to the crease looking to set off where he left it two weeks
ago. Chris decided that the drive and the sweep were his scoring shots this week
and made a well constructed 23 before unluckily picking out the only boundary
fielder on the leg side. Veteran Dave Pounds then joined the party and realised
that Luke had not been running many quick singles and that was going to change.
Dave added youth and vigour to the partnership and frustrated the opposition
stealing quick singles wherever possible. Luke enjoyed the new style of play and
crept to his 50 from 92 balls before deciding that DP wasn’t going to stop
running and he bet start clubbing before an asthma attack got the better of him.
With the run rate increasing fast DP fell into the Hill trap and picked out the
only boundary fielder on the leg side for 27. Jay Boucher went in with license
to thrill and did not disappoint as he began to hit the ball hard and straight
finding the boundary with regularity. Luke Spence was well set by now and his
second 52 came from just 26 balls as he eventually fell for a patient but
thoroughly enjoyable 103. Jay and Monik took the KCC home finishing 24 and 3 not
out respectively as KCC declared on 243 from 47 overs. Chris Dunn was the pick
of the S&L bowlers returning figures of 14.3.49.3
A quick turnaround at
tea gave S&L 45 overs in which to get the runs and it first appeared as if
they were going to have a go at the total as opener Sandeep Kumar tried to tuck
into some length bowling by Chris and Monik. With 23 on the board inside the
first 3 overs the game was on and KCC were please that a team had come to
Fleckney rd with positive intentions. This did not last long as Hill proved the
class act he is as pace and accuracy saw him claim the top three batsmen’s
wickets for a combined score of 30. Dave Pounds yet again showed the spring was
in his step as he snaffled an early contender for catch of the season at slip.
Monik Patel struggled with his lines at the clubhouse end and Kev Messenger came
into the attack. Yet again he bowled with patience and intelligence claiming the
next three wickets to fall and S&L looked all at sea going from 68 for 4 to
79 for 7. Trench warfare then began as Pounds, Windy Miller, Kev and Luke all
had a go at trying to dislodge the limpit like lower order batsmen. A moment of
brilliance from Jay Chauhan behind the stumps saw a smart stumping remove
Mallander who faced 5 overs without scoring but Chris Dunn and Umar Abbassi
batting 8 and 10 respectively held on for S&L who finished 118 for 8 in the
42nd over. Chris Hill’s 4 for 31 in 12 and Kev Messenger’s 3 for 11 in 8
highlighted that the old guard still have the edge on the younger generation but
with Monik and Miller increasing in confidence and ability week by week it will
not be long before they are taking the plaudits and returning with bundles of
wickets to their name.
18 points claimed and KCC now sit 2nd in the table
after round 3.

It probably took a fair amount of hard work to build the pyramids, or drain enough of the North Sea to make Holland a bit bigger than Luxembourg but neither of these activities can compare with the task performed by the KCC ground team this week……at least that’s what Abbo told me after his fifth pint of Holt’s. Whilst large parts of Leicestershire remained suitable only for growing rice (resulting in a blank weekend for both the second anfd fourth teams) the Kibworth ground whilst damp was pronounced playable.

Hard work was rewarded with a nail biting game for the first team who looked to have failed in their task of defending 141 when Sileby required just one run from the final over with two wickets in hand. Even a run out off the first ball of Dan Broughton’s over left those in a betting mood backing the visitors but four toe crushing yorkers later Sileby still needed that one run and when they attempted a scambled single off the final ball a comfortable run out saw Kibworth secure the tie.

Not quite as much entertainment on the bottom pitch as Luke Spence’s ton set up a 3rd team score that was far too much for visitors Stewarts & Lloyds. Three early Chris Hill wickets ended any threat and the rest of a chilly afternoon was spent trying to chip away at a defensive middle order. ” Do you get big crowds at your ground” was the enquiry from Dave Pounds as the ball was patted away for the hundredth time. In the end eight wickets helped earned KCC 18 points to place them second in the table.

On Sunday a small miracle occured and the sun came out!! In response Kibworth managed to top their total from the previous day with Tom Burton striking 65 as they ran up 188 against Woolaston in the Kingfisher National Cup. in response the Northamptonshire side staged a late rally but ended up 40 short of their target to send KCC through to a second round tie against either Chesham or Banbury.

KCC 3rd XI secured a winning draw in their first league game of the 2012 season. On a rain affected day new skipper Chris Hill lost his first of many tosses and KCC were put into bat. Luke Spence and Dips Patel put on 73 in the first 18 overs before Dips lost patience and chipped an outside edge to backward square.
Ben Matthew joined Luke and together they looked solid, with Luke passing 50
before a rain delay knocked them off their stride and Luke was caught without
adding to his pre rain 55. Chris Hill added immediate fire to the batting line up and found the boundary early and often. Ben Matthew was unlucky to be stumped having reached a classy looking 18 and Greg Gibson joined Chris Hill at the crease with the sole aim of working the ball around a soggy outfield. Chris and Greg put on 67 for the next wicket before slow bowling got the better of Greg and he wandered down the wicket to be stumped by a smart piece of keeping for 23. David Greenhalgh joined Chris for the last 5 overs of the innings and looked to give Chris the bulk of the strike. With a declaration in sight Chris found the boundary with a large six down to long on bringing up his maiden third team hundred. David put the last ball of the innings into the pavilion flower beds
with a horrible cross batted hoik giving KCC the chance to declare on 233 for 4.

With rain in the air getting 25 overs in to make a full game was the KCC priority and Chris had asked for tight bowling early on. Sadly his words fell on deaf ears with the early bowlers struggling to find tidy lines. Jon Butler pulled up in his first over with an undisclosed leg injury and Monik Patel came into the attack. Kev messenger found his aim at the other end and a high quality delivery removed the opening batsmen’s leg stump. Kev Struck again in the 12th over and Old Norts were 43 for 2 with extras totalling 20! The introduction of Greg Gibson from the pavilion end and Monik Patel finding his lines from the pylon end saw a tightening of the ship and Old Norts fell well behind the run
rate. Monik claimed a well deserved wicket in his last over and Greg teased a
lofted drive out of a well set Steven Ball which Dips duly snaffled a short mid
off. Harry Miller added fire to the attack but was unlucky to return wicket less
with a large number of LBW decisions turned down. With Old Norts settling for a
losing draw it became trench warfare with KCC looking to pick up any wickets
they could. Luke Spence came into the attack and found the outside edge of Tom
Heathfield for 14 and Monik Patel removed the Old Norts stalwart David
Heathfield who top scored with 44, with a lovely in swinging Yorker. Old Norts
secured one batting point in the last over of the game as Kev Messenger was
unlucky not to have another wicket as an outside edge flew threw the slips much
to Kev’s annoyance. Old Norts finished 129 for 7 with debutant Kev Messenger
being the pick of the KCC bowlers 10.3.33.3.
17 Points on a rain affected week sees KCC topping the league with a big away game at Grendon next week. Chris Hill will be asking for his bowlers to tighten their lines against a
strong Grendon batting line up and and hopefully some warmer weather will bring
warmer hands and more catches held in the weeks to come. All in all a good solid
performance and an excellent 100 form Chris Hill who who may forget the score

On an afternoon where it wouldn’t have been surprising to see a polar bear (or was it Abbo in a thick jumper) wandering by the bottom square the Sunday XI remerged from
their hibernation to resume their particular brand of mischief. The defeat may have been comprehensive, the weather cold but the warm welcome given to new captain Kean Folley was absolutely genuine. To a team that has had more skippers than your average girls
only playground in recent years it was a pleasure to welcome such a clubman into the role.

Now I don’t want to labour the point but it was cold. The sort of cold where you man bits would cheerfully retreat in falsetto style if they could. However if only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun then only barking mad cricketers risk a game in Mid-April and therefore into the breach went the Legends.

Now it has to be said conditions were difficult (one sideline wag referred to it as links cricket), the wicket very slow and the home batters generally showed good patience and
application to try and work their openings. Special nods in that direction to be given to openers Henry Simpson and Monik Patel who showed commendable fortitude with the ball passing the outside edge on numerous occasions. Especially in the case of Monik this
was some bowling achievement as he wielded a bat that must have taken about half of Sherwood Forest to press. I’m not saying it was bulky but that particular piece of willow was comfortably thicker than Forrest Gump with a hangover.

You can’t dress it up however and a final Kibworth total of 76 for 8 after 40 overs does point to, perhaps understandably, a lack of scintillating stroke play. Indeed
every batter who tried to ramp up the scoring usually found themselves on a return ticket to devastation island pretty soon after. If Kibworth were to win it would require bowling more miserly than Scrooge and with more movement than John Travolta with a cattle
prod attachment.

Faced with a low total, an open bar and an uncertain wicket perhaps it was not surprising that one visiting opener went onto the offensive. Showing some neat touches, a
good eye and a desire to finish proceedings before a passing eskimo decided to reclaim the square it some became apparent defeat would not be long coming. There would however be time for Monik to bag the first two Sunday victims of the season, both with balls that
clipped the top of middle and off, the second one breaking the bail into the bargain. Such talent is good to see but probably wholly out of place within the Sunday environment.

So defeat it was but you can’t be too down at the beginning of the season. The banter was good, fun was had and it was great to see familiar faces once more. Roll on next
week.
