In a closely contested match, the 2nd XI fell short of victory against Lutterworth Cricket Club by 19 runs. Kibworth won the toss and elected to field, with Lutterworth finishing their innings at 151 all out in 43.5 overs. Despite a fighting 8th-wicket partnership between Freddie Bashford and Daniel Broughton, we were bowled out in the 44th over for 132.
The match began with Lutterworth openers Joe Hack and Sam Blockley putting up a solid partnership of 66 runs before both being dismissed in quick succession. With excellent catches by Russell Spiers and Zubin Bandi, Kibworth bowlers Luke Spence and Tom Petrie made the breakthroughs. Lutterworth lost wickets at regular intervals, with Zubin Bandi claiming an impressive 4-wicket haul. Akash Bhakta also chipped in with two crucial wickets, ensuring Lutterworth was dismissed for 151.
Kibworth had a shaky start to their chase, losing three early wickets with the score at just 12. The situation worsened as they slumped to 37-7, prompting a crucial partnership between Freddie Bashford and Daniel Broughton. The pair added 92 runs for the 8th wicket, with Bashford scoring a resilient 62 not out (including six fours and two sixes) and Broughton contributing 24 runs. However, on this occasion, their efforts were not quite able to get the team over the line.
Despite the loss, a relatively new 2nd XI displayed character and determination in their performance against recently relegated Lutterworth. They will hope to build on this over the coming weeks.
